Did you know?

  • 62% of female business owners are between 40 and 59 years old.
  • 36% of small business owners are women, and are more likely to start a new franchise rather than buy a pre-established business. Nearly 60% of the largest female-owned businesses started with a fresh or original business idea.
  • 3 million women own businesses in the US. Since the year 2000, the number of companies owned by women has increased by 100%—twice as high as the global average when it comes to male entrepreneurs.
  • 70% of new companies in the US were created by women of color, and in the last 20 years, this number has increased by nearly 500%. That means that 259 Black women and 227 Latina women open new businesses every day.
  • Nearly 90% of all women-owned businesses generate less than $100,000 annually. Of all women-owned companies, only 2% generate more than $1 million.
  • Businesses founded by women earn twice as much money than those founded by men. A Boston Consulting Group study of 350 startups revealed that women-owned businesses are safer for investors. This is likely because most female entrepreneurs own companies that are their only source of income—meaning they are fully committed to their business’ success.
  • Businesswomen usually face greater difficulties obtaining funding for their business ventures and are subjected to more scrutiny than their male counterparts. However, women are 9% less likely to seek funding in the first place.
